The US Constitution is still – 238 years after its creation – referred to almost daily in global news coverage and is currently in focus given the recent re-election of Donald Trump.
There is a fascinating story behind its creation; it almost didn’t happen in the face of anti-federalist opposition. The prominent minds behind it including George Washington, James Maddison, Alexander Hamilton with 52 others, influenced by the philosophy of the Enlightenment, challenged themselves to produce the very finest design in every detail.
- In this talk Mark Ryland will unpack this story and give us insight into the remarkable process that led to its creation, ratification and subsequent amendments and well as explaining its main provisions.
This is the first of a two-part talk series, the second talk on 30th March will explain Britain’s unwritten constitutional arrangements.
